Yeah, well I upgraded the vid (from an 4mb ATI Rage); stuck in a nic, 7200 rpm/133 hard disk, a 48x cdrw and a extra 128mb stick of ram and this machine still sucks (surprise, surprise). I've been thinking of slapping in one of those newfangled nforce2 boards...don't want to spend a lot here...

Welcome to the boards chuckp888! :) Is it possible that maybe that the ide cables are loose enough not to be detected correctly. Open up the box and reseat the cables. Also see if the drives are being seen by the bios in startup mode; Comptech would know more about bios tweaks.

I've seen the 4600 as low as $299; seems some store are clearing out stock as the 9700 ulterly whips it in (almost?) every benchmark.
