That everyone I know who runs linux just sits and watches their machine compile patches all day, whereas windows users actually do stuff on their computers?

Gentoo users are the worst - some of the other distros are slightly aimed at actually doing stuff

Gentoo is crazy... source code is bigger than binaries usually, so firstly, they waste bandwidth. Second, there are a finite number of gcc optimizations, and a smaller number that matter. Why not just compile the binaries for the 4-5 different machines needed instead of wasting millions of CPU hours around the world? i686, Athlon, um, thats about all there is
